Background and scope
The DESIREE double electrostatic ion-storage ring facility (for more information see https://www.desiree-infrastructure.com) is used to study interactions of positive and negative ions with each other and with light.
As a national infrastructure, DESIREE provides beam time for external- and internal users who want to carry out ion-storage ring experiments. The optical parametric oscillator (OPO) Laser system inquired by this tender will serve as a working horse for a large variety of different types of experiments.
An OPO Laser system with 10 Hz pulse repetition rate was used for several earlier experiments including a study of near-threshold photodetachment of stored OH- ions. The time dependence of the measured data reveal the rotational cooling and in combination with a depleting cw laser, the OPO established a 97 % J=0 ground rotational level population in the stored ions [H.T. Schmidt et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 073001 (2017)].
This experiment and many others showed that the count rate of the experiment is limited by the pulse repetition rate of the OPO Laser system. Thus, going from 10 Hz to 1 kHz will mean a tremendous improvement for the data quality in this important category of experiments and a necessary step to enable more- and new experimental studies.
